Markham Stouffville Hospital was built on philanthropy – starting with the generosity of Arthur Latcham who donated the land in 1967 for our original hospital that would later be built in 1990. Fast-forward to 2014, and thanks to the generosity of our community, Markham Stouffville Hospital has more than doubled in size.

While the Expansion Campaign achieved incredible fundraising success – raising $56 million for the expansion and renovation project – the new Markham Stouffville Hospital must rely on fundraising dollars more than ever before. Government can’t fund all of our hospital’s needs, which is why your support is so vital.

As the surrounding communities continue to grow, the number of patients receiving care and treatment at MSH continues to rise. And while state-of-the-art equipment and modern beds are essential to delivering the best patient care, upgrades to technology and new, innovative efficiencies are just as vital. It is community support that will drive this innovation and enable growth. The need is real. The need is now!

We’re healthier together. We’re stronger together. We’re better together.

Dedicated to Excellence at Markham Stouffville Hospital

Inspired by our patients and dedicated to excellence, we will be a pioneer in creating a sustainable future for the healthcare system. We will provide access to the right care, at the right time, in the right place, by the right people and at the right cost. A better tomorrow is dependent on what we achieve today.

The need for more services in a growing community will only be met through innovation. Interdisciplinary teams will maximize the unique skills of our people. Technologies will allow the interface between the healthcare provider and the patient to be immediate, patient driven, less invasive and location independent. Scientific advances are increasing our understanding and ability to work with our genetic makeup for medical applications including illness prediction and targeted therapies.

Markham Stouffville Hospital has the ability to care for you AND the ability to care about you. Markham Stouffville Hospital is the right institution for our community. The ongoing renewal and expansion of healthcare delivery at Markham Stouffville Hospital means we can continue to meet the needs of your family close to home.

We are more than a general hospital; we are a leading community-based teaching hospital. We will pioneer new models for community hospitals in Ontario by building on our proud heritage and shaping an extraordinary future.

The need is real, the need is now. We urge you to make a difference right here, right now. Our hospitals and our teams of physicians, staff and volunteers, look forward to this new future with enthusiasm and a spirit that is committed to providing excellent evidence-based progressive community care.

Improving the Patient Centred Transformation

While we will internally build our capacity to deliver more of these services, we will accelerate the process by simultaneously developing relationships and partnerships with other leading hospitals and community institutions to increase access and strengthen our expertise at Markham Stouffville Hospital. We will seek opportunities to create seamless integration both physically and electronically with providers who have these core competencies and whose beliefs are aligned with Markham Stouffville Hospital.

The new Markham Stouffville Hospital is referred to as a Health & Wellness Campus – this reflects our vision to keep families healthy and come to the hospital only when you really need it. A number of the community outreach programs we offer focus on staying healthy, such as Falls Prevention. Falls are one of the main reasons we admit seniors so our goal is to prevent them from falling in the first place. To allow the hospital to maximize patient care in its new and redesigned space, we have partnered with the Community Centre so to access to it facilities, such as the fitness areas for rehab. We also use its meeting spaces and auditorium for work related to our teaching programs. Markham Stouffville Hospital is the only hospital in Canada to share a campus and partner like this with a Community Centre.

Building Capacity to Innovate

Markham Stouffville Hospital currently offers 40 clinical programs and services. Over the past 23 years, we have built a reputation for excellence in progressive community care. There are several programs and services for which we have leading capabilities and expertise including digital imaging, single-room maternity care and Fast Track emergency care. It is believed that these can be shared or offered to other health service providers through partnerships. In providing these services to others, we would play a critical role in integrating care in our community and would facilitate a seamless continuum of care for our patients. Markham Stouffville Hospital, a large community hospital with two sites, is perfectly situated to explore and prototype new models of care which can then be implemented as best practices throughout the Ontario system, improving access, quality and fiscal accountability.

Building on years of Markham Stouffville Hospital helping to educate Queen’s University School of Medicine residents and other allied health professionals, Markham Stouffville Hospital established The Family Medicine Teaching Unit in partnership with the University of Toronto in 2010. Young physicians train at Markham Stouffville Hospital for two years and our hopes are that many will choose to stay in our community and provide excellent comprehensive primary care. Trainees work with the faculty to ensure the health needs of our wonderfully diverse community are appropriately addressed. Being a teaching hospital increases the profile of Markham Stouffville Hospital, keeps staff current and helps attract and retain the best staff.
